Oregon Zoo marks 31st ‘ZooLights’

PORTLAND — The Oregon Zoo’s annual Christmas display, styled “ZooLights,” is back this year with a walk-through winter wonderland of more than 1.6 million colored lights. “Attendance has been off the charts the past several years,” said Ivan Ratcliff, the zoo’s guest services manager.

Celebrating a ‘Hollywood Christmas’

Cool temperatures and intermittent rain were unable to dampen the holiday enthusiasm of those attending The Dalles’ Starlight Parade Friday evening, as parade goers enjoyed the light parade entries, hot chili and a community Christmas tree lighting ceremony and visits with Santa at The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce following the parade.

Highway 30 reopens

For the first time since the Eagle Creek Fire, six miles of the Historic Columbia River Highway and several popular trails near Multnomah Falls have reopened. Reopened Gorge trails include the well-known Angels Rest, Wahkeena, and Larch Mountain Trail.

Robotic surgery comes to MCMC

When Dr. Marc McAllister does traditional prostatectomies at Mid-Columbia Medical Center, he works directly over the patient, through a long lower abdomen incision. But since July, he’s had another option: sitting at a console 10 feet away from the patient, peering through a high-def 3D monitor as he manipulates the four intricately maneuverable robotic arms of the da Vinci surgical system—one with cameras—which access the patient through pinpoint incisions.

Gift drive for foster youth Nov. 27

This year over 120 children in the Gorge will be spending their holidays in foster care, and area residents can help make them a little brighter by donating a holiday gift. Avenue Properties, Columbia Gorge CASA and Mid-Columbia Health Foundation have joined forces to create a Foster Youth Holiday Gift Drive, Nov. 27 through Dec. 15.

Project ELFF runs Dec. 4-6

Project ELFF (Everybody Loves a Fire Fighter) will be hitting the streets Dec. 4-6, as it celebrates its 32nd year of collecting non-perishable food for local food banks. Fire apparatus will be announcing their presence in neighborhoods with lights and sirens going, said Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue Chief Bob Palmer.

Beauty school gets makeover

The Gorge Academy of Cosmetology’s slogan is “creating beauty inside and out” and that doesn’t only apply to making people look fabulous. Owner Kerri Weed and her husband Tom have rehabbed the inside of the circa 1890s building at 422 E. 2nd St.—where they peeled up five layers of flooring to reveal the original, rich wood flooring—and are now working to do the same on the outside.
