Ballots mailed today

Ballots will be mailed out Wednesday, Oct. 17, and those going overseas, to the military or out of state have already been issued. Wasco County Elections Clerk Lisa Gambee said ballots should arrive in mailboxes within two to three days after they are sent out, depending on where people live in the county.

Food program gets boost

Columbia State Bank challenged customers and employees to donate canned and boxed food items for the Community Backpack Program and, by the end of one month, had a big stash to deliver. The “Take a Bag & Fill It” challenge will be an ongoing effort, said Kara Simpson, vice president and branch manager.

65th Reunion

The Dalles High School Class of 1953 held their 65th reunion September 21 and 22, with a gathering at Spooky’s Restaurant on Friday evening and dinner on Saturday evening at the Shilo Inn Portage Grill.

Subdivision approved in TD

The Dalles Community Development Department has approved a proposal to subdivide one 7.65 acre parcel adjacent to W. Scenic Drive, Radio Way and the city limits into 33 parcels ranging in size from 5,000 to 46,127 square feet. The property, owned by First Christian Church, is zoned low density residential. Application was made by Legacy Development Group.

WorkSource hosts job fair

WorkSource Columbia Gorge has partnered with local employers from across the Gorge to host a job fair in Washington Thursday, Oct. 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Elks’ Lodge, 124 NE Church Avenue, White Salmon. Participating employers need electronics assemblers, composite engineers, maintenance technicians, database administrators, cabinet makers, and more.

Parent questions lack of grant

As the Nov. 6 vote approaches on a $235 million bonding authority to replace four schools, a local woman caused a stir on social media last weekend questioning the district’s decision not to seek a $4 million matching grant for the project. A district official said North Wasco County School District 21 tried but failed to get two smaller planning grants that would’ve helped the district create the extensively detailed reports necessary to seek the larger grant.

School Bond: Assessment questioned

Wasco County Assessor Jill Amery sent out a press release last week to explain how passage of a measure to fund new schools would affect property taxes, but her description is being disputed by school officials and supporters of the bond levy. Amery’s account of how Measure 33-98 would play out is refuted by Randy Anderson, chief financial officer for North Wasco County School District 21, and Dr. Analene Pentopolous, chair of the Strong Community Schools committee, proponents of the bond.

Position 3 candidates share vision for city

City of The Dalles Incumbent Russ Brown, a retired contractor, has been challenged for the Position 3 council seat by Tiffany Prince, executive assistant to the president and board of education at Columbia Gorge Community College. Both candidates were presented with six questions and asked to respond in their own words, with a limit of 200 words per question.

Masters Family Circus to perform

Students at St. Mary’s Academy have a busy week planned as they prepare to join the circus. They will be learning the basics of circus performance ahead of this weekend’s “Masters Family Circus” performances Saturday and Sunday, with two shows daily at 2 and 5 p.m. at the academy, 1112 Cherry Heights Rd. in The Dalles.

Wasco County Election Information

Voters must register by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, to participate in the Nov. 6 general election and they can do that at the Wasco County Courthouse or online at oregonvotes.gov. Daycare workers charged

Daycare workers have been criminally charged after a baby died at the illegally-operated Mama Shell’s Daycare in Hood River, the Oregonian/OregonLive first reported Wednesday.
