Youth League hoops has signups

The Gorge Hoops Basketball League is opening a second registration day from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Riv Cafe, located at 401 E. 10th Street in The Dalles. Local boys and girls, from Washington and Oregon, from first-through-eighth grades, are welcomed to join this gorge-wide league, which is for school teams only.

Hawks cut down more times at Champoeg

Zack Ziegenhagen posted a season-best time for first place in the boys’ race, Vivian Harrah added fifth place to lead The Dalles’ junior varsity group and the varsity duo of Emma Mullins and Samuel Alvarez each were top-11 at the Champoeg Invitational Friday at Champoeg State Park in Newberg.

Although the 2018 season has been a roller coaster ride of sorts, head coach Neticia Fanene sees a team that puts in maximum effort on a nightly basis with a refuse-to-lose attitude. That can bode well for the future, especially with six seniors and four juniors on the roster.

Estacada rushed for 423 yards rushing and no passing yards on 55 plays in Thursday’s 44-22 Intermountain Conference football battle at Sid White Field. The first half featured seven touchdowns, the first coming at the 3:10 mark on a 13-yard rush by Gabe Helseth.

Runners get moving at Youth Cross Country event

The numbers were good, and the competition was even better, as 290 boys and girls from kindergarten-through-fifth grade gathered for the 18th annual Elementary School Cross Country races on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Sorosis Park.

Gorge bike path opens

CASCADE LOCKS—Six miles of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail, the paved bicycle and walking path closed for nearly 13 months by the Eagle Creek Fire, have re-opened between John B. Yeon Trailhead and Cascade Locks. The historic highway remains closed between Bridal Veil and Ainsworth, a six mile section, with no timeline yet for re-opening.

Free pass for 4th graders

PORTLAND – With the 2018-19 school year underway, it’s also time for all fourth graders and their families to claim their free Every Kid in a Park pass that allows free entry into all federal parks, forests, and recreation areas for a full year. Fourth graders can print out a paper voucher for free entry into all federal lands by visiting the Every Kid in a Park website at www.everykidinapark.gov.

Riverhawks secure sweep at Mustang Invite

Emma Mullins led from start to finish and reset her personal record while The Dalles varsity cross country squads swept both divisions for first place. The boys’ junior varsity team added a victory and the Riverhawks rang out 20 personal records and seven season-best marks at the Mustang Invitational held Thursday in Heppner.
