No. 3 Sherman takes out Damascus Christian

MORO – The Sherman Huskies defeated a pair of 2A schools earlier this season by large margins. Their first big test came in the form of Damascus Christian, a squad that was riding a four-game winning streak and sat atop the 1A rankings. Luke Martin scored 19 of his game-high 30 points in the second half and the duo of Keenan Coles and Wade Fields combined for 28 points to spearhead a 68-63 boys basketball win Saturday in Moro.

Redside boys and girls pull off tourney sweeps

For the first time since the 2015-2016 season, the South Wasco county boys basketball team earned a tournament championship after pulling wins against Crow, Mohawk and Camas Valley at the three-day Cougar Tournament ending Saturday in Crow. In Saturday’s title contest, SWC overcame foul difficulties and still managed to get a combined 53 points from Garrett Olson and Oscar Thomas to preserve a 59-40 victory over Camas Valley.

Hawks increase win total at Muilenburg

Last year, The Dalles scored 45 points and placed 16th out of 20 schools at the Muilenburg Wrestling Tournament in La Grande. This time around, the Riverhawks racked up 21 wins from eight different grapplers, 15 by pinfall, JR Scott and Mauricio Carrera each placed, and the team totaled 78 points for 13th place in the 18-team tournament.

Rangers plan to use their speed advantage

DUFUR – Anytime a team can roster state-champion track stars and some savvy veterans to go with some big six-footers in the paint, good things can unfold. That is what Dufur’s first-year head coach Hollie Darden is hoping for this winter on the basketball court, as he patrols the sidelines for both varsity basketball teams.

Increased development sought for Redside boys

MAUPIN – Last season, it took seven games for the South Wasco County Redsides to win two games. So far, SWC has already won one game in a pair of tournament contests and this up and coming group is aiming for more consistent play to climb higher and higher in the Big Sky Conference standings.

Focused SWC girls dialed in for the long haul

MAUPIN – In her three years as a varsity basketball player, South Wasco County senior Jada Myers has been on teams that have gone 47-28 overall, 29-13 in league action. Last year, the Redsides broke through in a major way with 23 wins, a perfect 14-0 league record and the program’s first Big Sky Conference title since the 1983 campaign. Myers says all those numbers are in the past.

Sherman captures hoops tourney championship

Ahead 18-17 at the half, the Sherman Huskies locked down defensively, holding 2A Stanfield to five second-half field goals in a 28-13 run for a 56-40 victory capture the Sherman Invitational title Saturday in Moro. Offensively, the No. 5-ranked Huskies rattled off 23 field goals, two 3-pointers, and converted 8 of 10 from the line.

Mullins, Alvarez take their talents to California

Since he hadn’t raced competitively in a couple of weeks, The Dalles junior Samuel Alvarez admitted that he did feel a little rusty, but he walks away from his latest performance feeling good about his marks. Alvarez turned in a final time of 17 minutes and 52.5 seconds for 81st place out of 412 in the junior boy’s category and Emma Mullins received a medal for finishing in the top-48 after ending up 24th in the 239-person senior girl’s division with her mark of 20:29.5 at the Foot Locker West Regional Cross Country Meet held Saturday at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

TD’s Scott secures top honors in Oregon City

Coming off his fifth-place state finish last season, The Dalles senior JR Scott was in total control with five consecutive victories to capture first place in the 195-pound division this past weekend at the Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Tournament in Oregon City.
